Awards of up to $5,000 are made for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study abroad. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need with the average award for a semester being $4,000. Students studying a critical need language while abroad in the Middle East, North Africa or other non-traditional locations are also eligible for an additional $3,000 Gilman Critical Need Language Supplement. This congressionally-funded program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and is administered by the Institute of International Education. Eligible students may also apply for the Gilman-McCain scholarship. The process of applying for both scholarships is the same.

• If you are a Temple student who would like additional support with your application, we recommend that you meet with a study abroad advisor to discuss your study abroad plan and review your application essay drafts. Follow these steps to schedule an appointment:

    • You will e-mail your Gilman application essay drafts to your study abroad advisor before your appointment, so schedule your appointment accordingly.
    • Your appointment should take place at least one week in advance of the official Gilman Scholarship deadline (see below).
    • Appointments are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
• Non-Temple students should consult the study abroad office at their home institution for application and advising process instructions.
