Founded in 1919, the University of Hamburg has approximately 38,000 students and 650 full-time professors engaged in teaching and research, as well as an additional academic staff numbering over 4,000. The University is spread over 150 buildings. The center of the University is its campus at Von-Melle-Park, which is situated close to the lake in the heart of Hamburg. Many more facilities belonging to the University are to be found in other parts of Hamburg.

Location

Situated in the north of Germany approximately one hour's drive from the Danish border, Hamburg is Germany's second largest city and home to 1.6 million people. With port facilities covering an area of roughly 100 km, the city is Germany's most important seaport; nearly 100 shipping companies are based in Hamburg. Hamburg is an exciting city with a lively cultural life, including theater, symphony, opera and museums, and many sports events.

Program Dates

Because the Fall Semester calendar dates overlap with the start of the spring semester at Temple Main Camus, Temple students may choose from Spring Semester or full Academic Year.

Fall Semester: mid-September through early February
Spring Semester: late March through mid-July
Academic Year: mid-September through mid-July

Program participants are required to be present for the entire length of the program, from the official arrival date through the program end date.

Housing

At Hamburg, you can choose to live in student accommodations or find independent housing. Detailed information about housing will be provided to all accepted students directly from the University of Hamburg.

Student Residences (recommended)
With this option, you can apply to live in any of the twenty-three available dormitories throughout Hamburg. Students can see each residence and apply online through Studierendenwerk Hamburg.

Independent Housing
As an Exchange student, you can also search for accommodations on your own. Rents vary based on size and location, but tend to be much higher than rent in a student residence. Temple Tuition and Standard University Fees

Students pay Temple tuition and fees directly to Temple. Visit Temple’s Bursar for per-credit tuition rates. All students pay University Services Fee.

Eligibility Requirements

Temple programs are open to qualified students matriculated at any U.S. college or university.

You are eligible to apply if you meet the following requirements.

Are enrolled fulltime and will have completed 2 semesters before studying abroad

You are enrolled as a full-time matriculated student at the time of application as well as during the semester prior to studying abroad.
You will have completed at least two (2) semesters of college-level study by the program start.

Are in good academic standing and meet minimum GPA requirement for the program

You meet minimum cumulative GPA requirement, on a 4.0 scale from all colleges/universities attended. The requirement varies by program:

Temple Semester Programs: 2.75 (Internships: 3.0)
Temple Summer Programs: 2.5
Exchange Programs: 2.75
External Programs: 2.5

You remain in good academic standing from the time of application until the start of your term abroad; students on academic warning are not eligible to participate.

Have a valid passport

You will need a passport, valid well beyond the length of your program, by the application deadline.

Are in good disciplinary standing

You are in good disciplinary standing at the time of application and remain so through the start of your term abroad. Students who have been found responsible for a code of conduct violation and will not be in good disciplinary standing (including disciplinary probation) may submit a petition for review.

Meet the minimum age requirement

You are at least 18 years old at the time of application.

Non-U.S. citizens: you are welcome to study abroad if you meet the eligibility requirements; however, you are not permitted to study abroad on an exchange program in your home country. Please speak to Education Abroad if you have questions about your eligibility.

For University of Hamburg, the following additional considerations apply.

Students will be selected mainly on the basis of their intellectual purpose and emotional maturity.
Pre-requisites: have completed at least four semesters of university-level German language courses.

Application Requirements

The standard application requirements pertain to all students applying to Temple programs.

Additional Requirements for University of Hamburg

German language evaluation, completed by a faculty member in the German department. You can send the evaluation form electronically to your evaluator from the online application or download a paper form from your application that your can submit directly to Education Abroad.

Admissions Timeline

Admissions is not rolling.
Temple nominates students for Exchange Programs after the deadline for the specific term.
Once you submit your application, you should expect a decision by the decision deadline, about one month after the program application deadline has passed.
