Temple in Spain Academic Program

Temple in Spain offers programs designed for students with any Spanish language background. Whether you are beginning to learn Spanish, are looking to advance your language skills, or Spanish is your first language, you can study in Spain.

Spring and summer term programs focus on Spanish language immersion, and the fall program offers a variety of courses in taught in English as well as Spanish language courses.

Fall Semester

Academic Focus: Business, Liberal Arts, Spanish, and STEM

In the fall semester, take English-taught courses alongside local and international students at the University of Oviedo, while beginning or improving your Spanish language skills. Your English-taught courses will be offered by University of Oviedo faculty in their degree programs, while Spanish courses will be taught by Temple Program Director Jaime Duran or faculty in the La Casa de las Lenguas, the university’s Spanish language center. 

You will take a full course load of 4-5 classes, including Spanish language as well as other degree requirements, for 12-18 credits. Students proficient in Spanish may be eligible take courses in additional subject areas.

Spring Semester

Academic Focus: Spanish Language Immersion 

The spring semester program is ideal for students seeking an immersive linguistic and cultural experience. In-class language instruction is combined in-class language with a homestay and daily interaction with Oviedo citizens.

You will be enrolled in the University of Oviedo’s Cursos de Lengua y Cultura Españolas para Extranjeros program, which offers courses in Spanish language and culture to international students. An integral part of the university, the program offers a broad range of courses, conducted in Spanish, at the intermediate and advanced levels and is housed at La Casa de las Lenguas, a center dedicated to language learning on the university's Campus de El Milán.

  • Undergraduate courses in Spanish language, literature, translation, history, art and cultural studies
  • You enroll in one of the program tracks below (intermediate or advanced), depending on your Spanish language background and take 5 courses within that track, for a total of 15 semester hours
  • Courses are taught by native Spanish-speaking faculty of the university and by University faculty member, Dr. Jaime Durán
  • Internships are available

Spring Semester Program Tracks

  • Intermediate Level Track: Intended for students who have, at minimum, successfully completed four semesters of university-level Spanish (including Spanish 1001: Basic I, Spanish 1002: Basic II, Spanish 1003: Intermediate I, and Spanish 2001: Conversational Review at Temple; or the equivalent.)
    • Students will choose courses from the Intermediate Track.
    • If you have not yet taken Spanish 2096 and/or Spanish 3001 prior to enrolling in the Oviedo program, you are required to take these courses while in Oviedo.
  • Advanced Level Track: Intended for students who have, at minimum, successfully completed seven semesters of university-level Spanish (including Spanish 1001: Basic I, Spanish 1002: Basic II, Spanish 1003: Intermediate I, Spanish 2001: Conversational Review, Spanish 2096: Composition, Spanish 3001: Advanced Composition & Conversation, and Spanish 3096: Advanced Analysis and Writing Skills at Temple; or the equivalent.)
    • Students will choose courses from the advanced track.

You will take a language placement test upon arrival in Oviedo to confirm your language track.

Summer

Academic Focus: Spanish Language Immersion

You will register for two courses at Temple in Spain: a morning language class, taught at the University of Oviedo by native Spanish-speaking professors, and an afternoon class, taught by a Temple or University of Oviedo faculty member. Upon arrival in Oviedo, you will take a placement test to confirm your level and course. 

Morning Session Spanish Language Course Offerings

  • Spanish 1002: Basic II (4 credits)
  • Spanish 1003: Intermediate I (3 credits)
  • Spanish 2001: Conversational Review (3 credits)
  • Spanish 3001: Advanced Composition and Conversation (3 credits)
  • Spanish 3003: Advanced Grammar for Communication (3 credits)
  • NOTE: Spanish 2096 is not offered on this program. Students who have already taken Spanish 2001, but have not taken Spanish 2096 must complete Spanish 2096 prior to departure for Spain so that they are eligible to take either Spanish 3001 or Spanish 3003 as their morning language course. 

Afternoon Session Course Offerings

  • Spanish 0815: Language in Society (3 credits). Fulfills GB (Human Behavior GenEd) requirement for Temple students. Taught in English.​
  • Spanish 2000: Special Topics (3 credits). Course using the city of Oviedo and region of Asturias as the classroom, with a focus on local art, history, literature and gastronomy. Prerequisite: Spanish 1002, or equivalent. Taught in Spanish.
  • Spanish 3221: Spanish Culture and Civilization (3 credits). Prerequisite: Spanish 2096: Composition, or equivalent. Taught in Spanish.
