Dr. Luigi Pirtoli (born September 1, 1948) is an Italian researcher in the fields of Radiological Sciences (mainly Radiation Therapy and Radiation Biology) and Oncology. He has been Full Professor and Head of the Radiation Oncology section of the Department of Medicine, Surgery, and Neurosciences of the University of Siena (Italy) until his retirement on October 2018. He has been also Deputy Director of this Department and, previously, Director of the Department of Human Pathology and Oncology at Siena University. He has been also Director of the Imaging Department of the University Hospital of Siena and President of the Italian Society of Radiation Biology. During the last decade, his scientific activity has been dedicated mainly to autophagy as an actionable biologic mechanism in brain tumors and, most recently, also to immunity in cancer and immunotherapy. Presently, he cooperates with Dr. Antonio Giordano (Temple University and Sbarro Health Research Organization - SHRO) in research programs on lung cancer and malignant pleural mesothelioma. He earned his MD from the University of Florence (1973) and specialized in Radiology, Radiotherapy, and Nuclear Medicine at the same University (1977).
