Emma Krampe, a civil engineering major with an environmental concentration, interned at the Hummustown cooperative in Rome, Italy as a rising junior during the summer of 2018. Hummustown's main goal is to employ Syrian refugees to cook and distribute Syrian food throughout Rome, and Emma worked to create the organization's weekly newsletter, helped at catering events, and volunteered at an emergency refugee camp. Emma was especially excited to work in a field outside of her major in Rome because she believes it is important to have a diverse skill set. Professionally, Emma learned to communicate with her co-workers despite language barriers (Italian and Arabic) and was humbled to assist marginalized groups in a respectful way. More than anything, from her internship Emma retained a desire to assist refugees and raise awareness of issues affecting refugee camps.
